A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a specialised hardware-based security chip designed to secure a computer through cryptographic keys. Its primary function is to protect sensitive data, such as passwords and encryption keys, from software-based attacks. The TPM ensures system integrity by verifying that the boot process hasn't been tampered with by malware. While it became a household name due to Microsoft's strict Windows 11 hardware requirements, Linux users also utilise it for disk encryption (like LUKS) and secure boot. Today it remains a critical component for establishing a "root of trust" in modern computing.
