The GNU Project is a pioneering free software initiative launched by Richard Stallman in 1983. Its primary goal was to develop a complete, Unix-compatible operating system - GNU - that respects users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, and change software. The project introduced the GPL (General Public License) and developed essential components like the GCC compiler, Bash shell, and Emacs editor. While the project created nearly every piece of a functional OS, it lacked a working kernel until the Linux kernel was integrated in 1991, forming the basis of the modern GNU/Linux systems used globally.
